Introduction/History:
The Deccan Odyssey is one of the subcontinent’s most luxurious trains; its cars, built in 2003, have been upgraded with new carpet and bedspreads recently, according to our ground suppliers. These improvements, which we recommended last year, bring this train up to “luxury” status, because its staff, service, amenities and food were already superb.
Accommodations
The train has 11 air-conditioned sleepers. Each has four twin-bedded compartments with en-suite shower, sink and toilet. Four “Maharaja” suites each take up half a train car. These suites have large double bed, separate sitting room and two bathrooms. Each sleeping car has a small lounge area at one end, where the car attendants greet guests with cool drinks and towels after each day of touring. The lounge also has a flat-screen television, with movies available.
Dining
Fine Indian and Continental cuisine (a choice is offered) is served on board in two restaurant cars. The high level of on-board service is delivered by the Taj Hotel Group.
Lounge Cars
The Taj Hotel Group provides professional, smooth service throughout the train. Lovely meals are beautifully served in the two diners, with a choice of Continental and Indian cuisine. Off-train dining is usually Indian cuisine only. Public spaces abound: a bar car with full-time bartender; conference car with plasma-screen TV, library and business center; and spa car with massage services, sauna, beauty parlor and a small workout room.
